Date & Time:
Sunday, 15 December2019 - 9:00am to 1:00pm
8:45pm   Registration Opens
9:00am   Lecture 1 - Dental Management of Patients who take Novel Oral Anticoagulants -- Dr Paul Sambrook

The new anti-coagulants or Novel Oral AntiCoagulants (NOAC) have become established and common in the management of a number of common medical conditions including atrial fibrillation. There is no test to guide the surgical management of patients medicated with these medications nor is there a reversal agent. I will discuss the indication and use of NOAC’s including their mechanism of action. I will also discuss the surgical peri-operativ management of such patients.
9:30am   Lecture 2 - The Essence of Rotary Instrumentation in Endodontics -- Dr Alex W. K. Chan
The goal of root canal preparation is to provide adequate but conservative access for disinfecting solutions without making major preparation errors. The introduction of nickeltitanium (NiTi) rotary instruments to endodontics in the past decades has changed the way by which root canal preparations are performed. It has resulted in dramatic improvement for successful preparation, not just for specialists but also general dentists.

This presentation is intended to provide clinicians with a knowledge base for NiTi rotary use and further aims to enable them to select a system which is most suitable for their needs. It will prompt discussion on how to use the rotary nickel-titanium instruments efficiently, and effectively while preventing the iatrogenic events.

11:30am   Lecture 3 - From single to full-mouth dental implant rehabilitation: How to achieve predictable results that Hong Kong patients want? -- Prof Cheung Lim Kwong

Most Hong Kong patients accept replacing missing teeth by dental implants is a good
treatment option. However, many dentists may not have thought about the success criteria Hong Kong patients want in deciding whether to have dental implant treatment or not. In the academic world, the success criteria of dental implants focus on the amount of bone loss in the first two years and ways to minimize the bone loss and peri-implant soft tissue loss in the long term.

With my retirement from the university, I am able to spend more time with each patient in private clinic. I soon realized that Hong Kong patients have different demands, which are different from the success criteria of dental implants published in scientific literature. In this lecture, I will share with you my dental implant experience in achieving predictable results from single implants of anterior and posterior teeth to all-on-4 implant rehabilitation while fulfilling the expectation of the Hong Kong patients.

2:00pm Lecture 1 - Cone Beam CT for every clinic. What are the considerations? -- Dr Thomas K.L. Li

Cone beam CT (CBCT) has been widely used in dentistry for over 10 years. More and more dental practitioners in every specialty have equipped their clinics with this imaging equipment. The price of the equipment has reduced a lot. The cheapest machine has a price tab similar to a good quality panoramic machine. Unlike a standard panoramic machine, CBCT is available in many different configurations and field sizes. Which should you buy? What are the considerations?
3:15pm Break
3:45pm Lecture 2 - Digital dentistry is today -- Dr Walter Y.H. Lam

Technology is changing our life. Intra-oral scanning has many advantages over the impression taking. At the same time, there are always new materials with better aesthetic and mechanical properties entering the market. These materials require computer-assisted manufacturing (CAD) processes for fabricating dental restorations. In the near future, we may even be able to print our dental restorations..

This presentation will discuss some of recent developments in digital dentistry and workflows. Basic dental principles, however, stands with time and should not be violated.

The Annual Scientific Meeting was successfully held on 1 May 2016 at the Hong Kong Football Club.

Dr. Albert Lee, Council Member, briefly reported our College’s recent activities to the audience, followed by the lectures from our invited speakers: Drs. Yoshitsugu Terauchi and Gracemary Leung. It was a conjoint event with the Hong Kong Endodontic Society and the Asia Committee was grateful for the kind support from Professor Gary Cheung and the HKES committee. The lectures were informative and were well attended by our local Fellows and Members. Last but not least, the Asia Committee thank Dr. SF Leung for organizing this event. Without his hard work this event could not be so successful.
