A 3 day Orientation Course has been developed by Adj A/Prof Richard Chan to prepare candidates to sit the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh examinations for the Diploma in Implant Dentistry

Course Outline

This course will test the candidate’s range of knowledge and understanding that underpins direct patient care. Attributes to be tested include problem-solving, evaluation of evidence, critical reading, communication skills, up-to-date knowledge, understanding and management of all aspects of implant dentistry. The course is a great way to validate your knowledge and skills in implant dentistry and extend your CPD in the subject area.

Areas covered include:

  • Scientific basis of implant dentistry
  • Clinical assessment skills
  • Practical implant procedures
  • Application process for the RCS Edinburgh exam including log book and case presentation submissions
  • Preparing candidates for the oral exams

Who should attend?

The Orientation course is open to anyone wishing to sit the Diploma in Implant Dentistry Examinations. Clinicians with at least 3 – 4 years placing and restoring implants in clinical practice, not necessarily involving advanced procedures such as bone grafting.

How to register?

The Course fee is $3,070 inclusive of GST. Please complete the Diploma in Implant Dentistry Orientation Course registration form and return it to the College by Friday 19th May 2017.


Course Convenor

Adj A/Prof Richard W Chan

Dr Richard Chan is a graduate of the University of Sydney and has published in international and Australian journals and has lectured extensively on restorative and implant dentistry in Australia and internationally. For many years he was a fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (Dental Surgery), College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong (Prosthodontics), Pierre Fauchard Academy and the International College of Dentists.

He is co-ordinator for several implant training courses for Continuing Education and the Graduate Diploma in Oral Implants at the University of Sydney (1999 to 2007). He is currently on the faculty for Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Prosthodontics) and was Program Director of Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Oral Implants) at the University of Sydney.  He is also an Honorary Associate Professor in Oral Rehabilitation at the University of Hong Kong.  Richard maintained a multi-disciplinary referral practice in Sydney limited to implant surgery and prosthodontics and was a former president of the Australasian Osseointegration Society (NSW) Inc.

Course Presenters

Dr David Sykes 

A specialist Prosthodontist in Sydney, David has made substantial contributions to College Committees include the NSW Regional, Constitution Committee, Finance and Audit and the Prosthodontics Board of Studies. His other contributions include the Dental Board of NSW, as a Senior Clinical Tutor with the University of Sydney and as Reserve Dental Officer with the Royal Australian Navy. David was elected to Council in 2006 and is currently the Immediate Past President for the RACDS.

Clin A/Prof Anthony Au 
Prosthodontist  BDS, MDSc (prosthodontics), FRACDS, FICD, FADI, MRACDS(pros)

Dr Anthony Au is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney and a member of the Academy of Australian and New Zealand Prosthodontists.  He is in full time specialist practice in Sydney and has been a prosthodontic mentor for the Faculty’s Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (oral implants) since 2004.

Dr Louise Brown 

Dr Louise Brown is one of the few (if not the only) dentist in Australia who is registered in three specialties with AHPRA – Periodontics, Public Health Dentistry and most recently, in Dentomaxillofacial Radiology. As well as her two Masters degrees (MDSc(Perio) from Melbourne Uni and Master of Public Health degree from the Uni of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her DCD (DMFR) degree), she has also completed a PhD from the University of Adelaide, and is a member of the College in the Special Stream of Periodontics. She is a past president of ANZAP and has served on numerous other committees.

Dr Scott Davis
Prosthodontist   BDS (Syd), MDSc (UWA), FRACDS, MRACDS (Pros), FPFA, FICD

Dr Scott Davis completed a bachelor of dental surgery in 1984 and a master’s degree program in restorative dentistry at UWA in 1992.  He worked on the Faculty at the dental school at UWA as a senior lecturer.  He also worked in part time private practice in West Perth at the Brånemark centre with Dr Patrick Henry.  His primary interest is implant rehabilitation and full mouth reconstruction.  He has lectured nationally and internationally.  He is a NSW Executive Council member of the Australian Dental Association as well as being a member of the Federal Council of the ADA.

Dr Lydia Lim
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon BDS(Hons), MDSc, FRACDS, FRACDS(OMS)

Dr Lydia Lim is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Sydney. She is in private practice at Chatswood and she is also a consultant OMS surgeon at Westmead Hospital where she is involved in post-graduate teaching. She is a graduate of Sydney University and completed her post-graduate surgical training in Sydney obtaining the MDSc and FRACDS (OMS) qualifications. She then furthered her training in the United States at the University of Texas. 

Lydia‘s practice specialises in Orthognathic surgery and Implantology. She has been performing implant surgery for the past 15 years with a particular focus on complex implant cases including bone grafting, sinus grafting, full arch and zygomatic implant surgery. 

Dr Vijay Tumuluri
Periodontist  BDS, MSc, MDSc (Perio), FRACDS (Perio)

Vijay Tumuluri graduated from the University of Sydney in 1995. He subsequently completed a Master of Science Degree, studying cell proliferation in oral cancer. A number of papers have been published in Australian and international journals from this research. In 2003 he completed a Master of Dental Science specialising in periodontics and implant dentistry from the University of Queensland in Brisbane.

Vijay is a past president of the Australian Society of Periodontology (Federal Branch) and has held numerous roles including president of the Australian Society of Periodontology (NSW Branch).  He is also a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney and teaches postgraduate Dentists at the same institution.  Additionally he is an ITI Speaker.  Vijay has given a number of lectures and seminars to students, dentists and specialists, around Australia and NZ.  He currently runs a successful periodontal private practice based in Sydney
