THE R.A.C.D.S FOUNDATION

In 2001, the Council of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons resolved to establish a Foundation. The Foundation’s main aims are to support post graduate study, research and training in the field of dental science.

Following this decision, the College registered a company in the name of The R.A.C.D.S. Foundation, which was formally constituted on 31 January 2003. Generous donations from many Fellows and others in the College family were received including a sizeable contribution from the College Council in 2006.

The RACDS Foundation is a company limited by guarantee with its principle objective to act as trustee for the College’s Research and Education Fund. The Australian Taxation Office has endorsed the Foundation as a tax exempt charity with all gifts to the Foundation being tax deductible to donors.

As at 1 January 2007, the Directors of the Board of The RACDS Foundation are:

Dr Ross J. Bastiaan AM, RFD – Chairman

Dr William J. Winspear – Deputy Chairman

Dr E. Dell Kingsford Smith – Secretary

Dr Timothy D. Cutler – Treasurer

          Dr Ian D. Hewson

The fiduciary duty of the Directors is strongly upheld through the development of an investment policy to manage funds and meet identified objectives. With the benefit of professional advice, strategies are constantly being devised to ensure sound financial planning, consistent with the realities of fund raising in the current economic climate.

The Foundation is committed to presenting its profile to the College fellowship, the dental profession and corporations at large, with innovative concepts and effective communications.

During 2006, the Board of the Foundation undertook a detailed re-examination of its operations with a strong focus of enhancing its ties with the College as well as attracting commercial partnerships, both nationally and internationally.

Consequently a comprehensive paper entitled “Review of the status and operating environment of The RACDS Foundation” was prepared as a basis for future planning activities in order to support a range of postgraduate study, research and training that relate to projects of the College and its fellows.

Whilst the Foundation is a separate and independent statutory body, it maintains the closest of ties with the College in order to ensure the future growth of both organisations. The Foundation has determined that it will allocate funds according to where it sees need and after consultation with the College Council.

The Foundation has established Bequest and Endowment Programmes to provide options for donors to either bequeath specific amounts or personal assets, or alternatively to finance a gift during their lifetimes. Suitable acknowledgements by both the College and Foundation will ensure those who contribute to these programmes, are honoured in perpetuity.
