OMS Basic Surgical Training (BST) Examination
Multiple Choice Questionnaire (MCQ) Examination
The MCQ examination consists of a 3 hour paper comprised of two parts: Part A: General Surgical Science (2 hours) and Part B: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (1 hour). The MCQ paper contains single answer, relationship-analysis and variable response questions. A pass must be achieved in both Part A and Part B of the examination.
Clinical Examination
The MCQ examination must be taken concurrent with the Clinical Examination. The emphasis of the Clinical Examination is on the application of basic science knowledge and understanding to clinical practice relevant to surgery at a level of knowledge that can be expected of a candidate at the end of BST who is to apply for selection for AST.
The test comprises various stations. The tasks required include, but not be limited to, history taking and examination, demonstration of practical technical skills, the application of basic science knowledge, data acquisition and analysis.
The OSCE / Oral examination is likely to be comprised of 9 stations of either 20 minute or 10 minute duration.
Candidates must achieve a pass in both the written (MCQ) and the clinical examinations to pass the Basic Surgical Training Examination.
