Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The OMS Final Examination is usually held in late August/early September.  For exact dates of the forthcoming examination, please check the College Calendar of Events.


Format of the Examination

 The examination is in seven parts:-

 

i)     Written paper I of three hours duration

 

ii)     Written paper II of three hours duration

       These will each consist of a mixture of essay and short answer questions.

 

iii)    Clinical Examination   Long cases - this will involve the detailed assessment of one or more patients followed by presentation to and discussion with the Examiners

 

iv)    Clinical Examination   Short cases - the assessment, diagnosis and discussion with the examiners of several patients

 

v) a. Surgical Pathology and viva.  Candidates will be required to examine photomicrographs of commonly encountered pathological conditions relevant to the specialty.  These will then be discussed and examined in a Surgical Pathology viva.

 

       b.Surgical Anatomy viva. Candidates will be required to examine anatomical specimens of the head and neck with examiners present.
