Final Examination

The Final Examination consists of two parts.  Part I is General Dentistry which is compulsory.  Part II is elective with candidates examined in the section of their choice.

There are three elective sections:

1.  Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology

2.  Restorative Dentistry and Periodontics

3.  Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics

The Final Examination takes place in January each year and has written, clinical and oral and viva voce components.  Candidates are expected to have a level of knowledge and clinical experience superior to that of a person holding a graduating degree. 

They are also expected to demonstrate broad experience in the general practice of Dentistry, maturity of clinical judgement, familiarity with current literature and clinical application of knowledge.

The written papers of the Final Examination are held in Auckland, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Sydney.  The clinical and oral and viva voce examination are held in Sydney (Westmead Centre for Oral Health).

For the written paper to be held in regional centres, Australian venues require a minimum of five candidates and overseas venues require a minimum of ten candidates at each location.  Candidates will be notified after close of registrations if candidate numbers do not meet requirements.

Week One - Written Papers

Written papers are usually held on the Tuesday and Wednesday.  Both the General Dentistry and Elective Section papers are of three hours duration.  As examinations are run concurrently, examination times differ depending on the regional centre the candidate selects.

The format of the Final Examination utilises a variety of assessment techniques to suit all candidates.

Part I General Dentistry  (Tuesday)

1.  Multiple Choice Questions
2.  Short Answer Questions
3.  Problem Solving Questions - Treatment Planning - 2 questions


Part II Elective Section (Wednesday)

1.  Compulsory Essay Type Question - current topic
2.  Long Answer Questions - a choice of 2 from 3 - each question broken down into 4 parts.


Week Two

Clinical and Oral and Viva Voce Examinations are usually held from Monday to Wednesday.

Part II Elective Section

Short Case - 10 minutes
Long Case - 20 minutes

Eligibility

Please be aware that under Regulation 17 and 18, admisssion shall not be granted to a candidate until three years after the obtaining of a dental qualification.  Candidates must also have two years of clinical work experience.
