Aims and Objectives

The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons is a postgraduate education body established primarily to improve the knowledge and skills of dental practitioners.

Recognising the professional responsibility of dentists to the community and the advantages of postgraduate study at an appropriate level as an aid to the better fulfillment of this responsibility, the College was established to encourage this activity within the profession. This objective is promoted through the establishment of Primary and Final examinations. Successful completion of these examinations provides evidence of improved knowledge and skills by the candidate who is then elected to Fellowship in the College.

The College has a particular role in providing a type of postgraduate education alternative to the study required for higher degrees in universities which is not always possible for those engaged in the private practice of dentistry.

The aims and objectives for which the College was established are:

  1. To promote the study of the science and art of dentistry; to encourage research in clinical science and the practice of dentistry; to bring together dentists for scientific discussions and clinical demonstrations; and to disseminate knowledge of the principles and practice of dentistry for the benefit of the community by such means as may be thought fit.
  2. To consider and advise as to any course of study and training, and to prescribe Regulations relating to the establishment of Examinations to promote and ensure the fitness of persons desirous of qualifying for Fellowship in the College.
  3. To consider and advise as to courses of study and training and to prescribe Regulations relating to the establishment of examinations at an advanced level in such special fields as the College may from time to time consider desirable.
  4. To establish the Classes of Fellows and Honorary Fellows of the College and to admit to the respective Classes such persons as shall be eligible therefore, in accordance with the Constitution and Regulations, and to make and maintain a Register of Fellows and Honorary Fellows of the College. 
  5.  To institute and provide lectures and demonstrations upon dental and cognate subjects for the benefit of Fellows of the College and to admit to such lectures and demonstrations person who are not Fellows of the College on such occasions as shall be deemed expedient by the College.
  6. To establish and maintain an appropriate relationship with other learned Colleges, Universities and Professional Organisations.
  7. To encourage and work towards assisting standardisation of requirements for specialisation throughout Australia and New Zealand.
  8. To consider all questions affecting the interests of the College, and to promote or oppose any legislative or other measures affecting such matters concerned with dentistry as are directly related to the interests of the College as may be deemed expedient by the College.
  9. To acquire, establish, print, publish, issue and circulate such periodicals, circulars, calendars or other literary or scientific works as may seem conducive to the promotion of these objects or in any way beneficial to the College.
  10. To acquire by purchase, donations or otherwise, a library of scientific works, and to maintain and from time to time extend and improve such library.
  11. To provide, establish and maintain offices, libraries and museums, and all requisite equipment.
  12. To establish and support or aid in the establishment and support of any charitable or benevolent associations or institutions connected with the purpose of the College, or calculated to further its objects.
  13. Subject to the Associations Incorporation Ordinance of the Australian Capital Territory 1953-1966, to accept any gift, endowment or bequest made to the College generally, or for the purpose of any specific object, and to carry out any trust attached to any such gifts, endowments or bequests. In case the College should take or hold any property which may be subject to any trust the College shall only deal with the same in such manner as allowed by law having regard to such trusts.
  14. To delegate all or any of its powers to the Council of the College or any Committee or Committees consisting of one or more Fellows.
  15. To undertake and execute any trust the undertaking whereof may be necessary or convenient for carrying out of any of the objects of the College.
  16. To procure the College to be registered or recognised in any State or Territory of the Commonwealth of Australia or any country or place outside Australia. 
  17. Generally, subject to the Associations Incorporation Ordinance of the Australian Capital Territory, 1953-1966, to purchase, take on, lease or in exchange hire or otherwise acquire any real or personal property wheresoever situate, and any rights and privileges which the College may think necessary or convenient for the purposes for which it is established and in particular any lands buildings erections plant and equipment.
  18. To construct, maintain and alter any buildings or works necessary or convenient for the purposes of the College upon land held in fee simple, or under lease from the Crown or any corporation or person, or upon any other tenure as the College may think fit.
  19. To sell, improve manage develop exchange lease mortgage dispose of turn to account or otherwise deal with all or any part of the property and rights of the College.
  20. Subject to the Associations Incorporation Ordinance of the Australian Capital Territory, 1953-1966 to borrow or raise or secure the payment of money in such manner as the College shall think fit and in particular by the issue of debentures or debenture stock perpetual or otherwise charged upon all or any of the property of the College both present and future and to purchase redeem or pay off any such securities.
  21. Subject to the Associations Incorporation Ordinance of the Australian Capital Territory 1953-1966 to invest and deal with the moneys of the College not immediately required in such manner as may from time to time be determined.
  22. To draw make accept endorse discount execute and issue promissory notes bills of exchange warrants debentures and other negotiable or transferable instruments.
  23. To do all such other things as are incidental or conducive to the attainment of the above objects.
  24. The intention is that unless the context shall otherwise require the objects specified in each Clause of this document shall be independent main objects.
